Affirmations for a Calm Birth

 

What are Affirmations?

 

 

Affirmations are statements aimed at effecting your subconscious mind.  All language conjures involuntary related mental images into the mind which could inspire, energise, relax, motivate – or the opposite!

 

Much of the language we use around birth in our current medical system may not inspire you to trust your body or feel calm about birth.  Take for example

 

 

What is said

What your subconscious mind  hears

What could be said instead

PAIN relief

 

You will be in pain

You will need drugs

Comfort measures for labour

Don’t tense up

Tense up
(your mind drops the ‘don’t)

Each time you breath out, just let go and relax

We need to do a growth scan,  sweep, break your waters,

Attach you to the heart rate monitor…..

· Your body can’t be trusted to grow / birth this baby safely.

· We decide what happens

· You must submit your bodily autonomy for the health of your baby.

We offer certain interventions which may speed things up – but if you are comfortable and happy and so is baby then just keep doing what you’re doing.

 

 


You get the picture!! Affirmations seek to undo some of those negative messages – allowing you to take control of your birth, your body, increase confidence in your body’s abilities.

 

So how can I use affirmations?

 

Read some examples (given out during a pregnancy yoga class), choose ones that speak to you.

 

 

Write your own if you feel inspired to.  Remember to use positive language and present tense.

 

 

Maybe you’ll just choose one to focus on, but I recommend taking as many as you can to stick around your house, car, and workspace so that you are reading them all day long.  Reprogramming your mind to think of birth as a safe, normal, relaxing, comfortable, and wonderful process.

 

My favourite places: Bathroom mirror for while brushing your teeth, next to your bed / alarm clock for morning & night time, next to your kettle / coffee pot, on your computer monitor, car stereo or dash board.  I’d love to see / hear about your favourite places – share a picture on my Facebook page!

Is it like Hypnosis / Hypnobirthing?

 

 

Using self-hypnosis during labour and birth is a very powerful tool.  There is already a huge overlap between Pregnancy Yoga and Hypnosis.  Many Pregnancy Yoga teachers already weave birth affirmations and positive hypnotic suggestions throughout the class.   (remember language is already inherently suggestive – a hypno practitioner has just learnt about the power of words and will choose their language more carefully, to increase your confidence rather than undermine it – there is no hocus pocus!)

 

Some Affirmations to Try

I will have a strong and healthy baby

 

 

 

I trust my body to know how to birth this child

 

 

 

I trust my instincts to know what I need in labour

 

 

 

I trust my instincts to do what is best for my baby

 

 

 

I am a strong and capable woman

 

 

 

My body knows how to birth my baby

 

 

 

I trust my instincts

 

 

 

Babies are born when they are ready, not when doctors, midwives or anyone decides.

 

 

 

My body is indeed beautifully and wonderfully made

 

 

 

It’s good for me to take care of myself.

 

 

 

I am be truthful with myself

 

 

 

 I Listen to my body and heart

 

 

 

I deserve to have the birth I desire

 

 

 

I trust my body

 

I trust my pain

 

I trust my labour

 

I trust in my baby

 

 

 

I am a strong and capable woman

My body knows how to have this baby just as my body knew how to grow this baby.

 

 

 

Keep breathing slow and even. Inhale peace, exhale tension.

 

 

 

Keep my mind on acceptance and surrender.

 

 

 

I surrender my birthing over to my baby and my body.

 

 

 

My body has a wide-open space for my baby to descend.

 

 

 

My body will give birth in its own time.

 

 

 

I love my baby and I am doing all that is necessary to bring about a healthy birth.

 

 

 

Birth is an easy and natural occurrence for which my body has been perfectly designed.

 

 

 

The strength of my uterine contractions is a sign of my feminine strength.

 

 

 

I surrender to the contractions and relinquish control of the forces within my body.

 

 

 

I allow my body’s natural anaesthesia to flow through my body.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The power and intensity of my contractions cannot be stronger than me, because it is me.

 

 

 

I am ready and prepared for childbirth.

 

 

 

My job is to simply relax and allow the birth to happen.

 

 

 

Just let my body do it; let it happen.
